The Kilt

kilt

The Scotsman’s kilt has long been a source of national pride. So much so that the English government made it illegal. In 1770, an English law was passed declaring that wearing kilts was strictly forbidden. This was because kilts were seen as a sign of loyalty to Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose army, made up of Highland clans, had tried to overthrow the English King.

We don’t really know when Scots started to wear kilts, but in the 17th century, it became the traditional dress. The earliest kilt, the “great kilt”, was more than five meters long and was very different from the skirt-like kilt as we know today. No kilt, or course, would be genuine without tartan - the traditional check that comes in seemingly endless variations, more than 3000!

In 1782, the English lifted the ban on kilts. And when Queen Victoria declared her love for tartan, it became the height of fashion. Today, Scots wear kilts to weddings and football matches.

Monument Valley

Monument Valley

Monument Valley is an American national park located in the West of the USA. This valley is famous for its red buttes that appear in stretches of desert, and belongs to the range of the Navajo Nation, an Indian tribe. Its size is 120 square kilometers and it iis more than three thousand years old.

The valley’s red color comes from iron oxide. All the hillocks we can notice have been sculpted by erosion. The climate is very barren and dry. Four hundred thousand people visit Monument Valley each year. But this park is very hard to visit, because of the lack of hotels near the site, and the poor condition of roads. The park also shelters a rare fauna and flora.

The valley is very famous because of the huge number of movies that have been shot in this desert. We also have to know that Monument Valley is also the place where the Indians are under duress to live because of European settlers.

Tower of London

beefeater

The Tower London is located in central London, near the Thames and the London bridge. This monument has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2004.

Its story began in the medieval time: to prepare his triumphal entry into the city, William the Conqueror built the Norman White Tower, the first part of this building. Afterwards Richard the Lionheart enclosed the tower. William Longchamp created new defences that doubled the size of the fortress, his succesor Henry III built the Wakefield and the Lanthorn towers to securise the place. Edward I transformed the fortress in a hard concentric castle.

Henry VIII built the royal apartments and since this moment, it became a royal residence. In 1653 Oliver Cromwell installed the Tower's first permanent garrison. From 1826 to 1845, the place was drained. After all these events severals defences were built but they were destroyed in the bombing of London during the Second World War. There are a lot of highlights in the Tower like the Crown Jewels and the ravens.

Rugby

rugby 1870

The term "rugby" was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis decided to take the ball in his arms and to run with it during a football game. Cambridge University immediately adopted the game, popularised it and made local rules.

The first Rugby Union was founded in London and firm rules of the game were established. The sport continued to flourish elsewhere particularly in Britain, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Until the late 1860s rugby was played with a spherical ball with an inner-tube made of a pig's bladder. During this time the rules evolved, and the number of players was reduced from 20 to 15 a side in 1877.

Today a try is worth 5 points and a conversion 2. A drop goal and a penalty score 3 points. The most popular competitions are the World Cup played every four years, Six Nations in Europe and the Tri Nations in the southern hemisphere.

The Oscars

The Oscars

In 1927, Louis Mayer, a producer, got the idea to create an organization which could honour the entire film industry. Things came together very quickly: the first ceremony was in May 1927. At that time, 5 branches were concerned: actors, producers, writers, directors and technicians.

The Academy decided to create a symbol which could honour the best achievements in filmmaking. A little statuette which represents a golden knight, was created: the Oscar. The little statuette was first made of bronze but quickly replaced by a britannia metal, and looked like silver. But because of the need in metal for the second World War, the Academy was forced to make the oscar in plaster. It didn't last very long because the president of the Academy, asked for the oscars to be made of gold-plated metal.

This year, on February 22nd, the 81st ceremony Nowadays, 25 branches are concerned and the winner of this year was Slumdog Millionaire with 8 oscars.

Mount Rushmore

mount rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, is in the Black Hills in South Dakota, USA. Its shows the heads of four American presidents: George Washington (the first president of the USA ), Thomas Jefferson (he wrote the Declaration of Independence), Theodore Roosevelt (he won the Nobel Peace Prize), and Abraham Lincoln (he abolished slavery): It’s the first 150 years of American history.

At first, Mount Rushmore was named Six Grandfathers, and it was later, during a prospecting expedition that Rushmore gave it his name.

It was created by the American sculptor Borglum. He died in the last year of his construction. His son, Lincoln, finished the monumental granite sculpture. Mount Rushmore is made of granite, a very hard rock. That is why miners, not artists, made the sculptures. 400 men worked on the sculptures from 1927 to 1941. Notably for a project of such size, no workers died during the carving.

The Irish Civil War

For many years, there has been a war in Ireland; it’s a war for independence but also a war between Catholics and Protestants. In the past Ireland became progressively under British control, the settlers’ majority was Protestants and the Irish were Catholics. The result was a religious war between these two factions after the appearance of tensions.

Ireland obtain its independence at the beginning of the 20th century, but inequalities remained. It was during the sixties that violence reappeared and gave Ireland a civil war climate. The IRA (Irish Republican Army) became the Catholic’s force and the Protestants created a paramilitary militia. When Great Britain refused the political prisoner status to the Irish nationalists, some of them began a hunger strike and ten died.

Finally, after years of war, we can see a peaceful issue to the fight. Indeed, the Sinn Fein, IRA’s political party, decided to concentrate its action on politics, not on resistance as before. But despite this goodwill demonstration, both armies refused to lay down their weapons.

Google is an American public corporation, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. All began in January 1996 with two students’ project at Stanford University, California, of creating a search engine that analyzed the relationships between websites to produce a better ranking. It would rank the results according to the times the search term appeared on each page and the number of links. It was called “BackRub”.

Harvard University

Harvard logo

Harvard University is a private university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA and a member of the Ivy League. It was founded in 1636, 16 years after the arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, so it is the oldest university in the United States.

Initially called "New College" or "the college at New Towne". The institution was named Harvard College on March 13, 1639 after the passage of a young clergyman named John Harvard. During its early years, the College offered a classic academic course based on the English university model. In the 17th century, Harvard University established the Indian College to educate Native Americans, but it was not a success and disappeared by 1693.

Between 1830 and 1870 Harvard became "privatized". While the Federalists controlled state government, Harvard had prospered, but the 1824 defeat of the Federalist Party in Massachusetts allowed the renascent Democratic-Republicans to block state funding of private universities. In the decades immediately after the Second World War, Harvard reformed its admissions policies as it sought students from a more diverse applicant pool.

Loch Ness Monster

Loch Ness monster hoax photo

Loch Ness is part of the Great Glen, in northern Scotland. It is the largest freshwater lake in Britain, 39km long and a maximum of 2.5km wide. Its maximum depth is around 230m and its average depth 137m. Because the waters are very cold and cloudy it is difficult to see underwater more than a few meters.

Monster legends are said to have started with an account of Saint Columbia in 565 AD, rescuing a swimmer from a lake creature. From then, stories of such a creature emerged periodically, but more recently in the 20th century. In 1933 with the Spicers, then H. Gray’s photo, the Surgeon’s photo (above), and then A. Grant in 1934. In 1960 it was recorded on a moving picture, in 1972 with a sonar...

In conclusion, the waters are big and deep enough to hide such a creature, but it is impossible for one to exist because there would have to be a breeding population.

Bows

Bows were invented in Prehistoric times and were used during many centuries until they were replaced by firearms. Bows were one of the most common weapons in history. They were used by many armies and tribes to hunt or for wars with other people. With the appearance of firearms, they started to be a hobby for Europeans and Americans.

There are two different sorts of bows, the first is the classic bow and the second is the compound. You have three sorts of classic bows: the classic bow (with a main part in an arc of circle), the recurve (with two side pieces curved in different directions) and the longbow (with a straight body, they are English bows). The classic bows are used in the Olympic Games.

The second sort of bow is the compound, created by Mrs Jennings in 1971. These bows have a pulley that allows its user to tighten the string with less power, so these bows are more powerful.

New York Taxi Cabs

NYC taxis

The taxicabs of New York City, with their distinctive yellow paint, are a widely recognized icon of the city. They are more important than in any other city in the country. They are sometimes called medallions or CPNC (Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience). Most traffic-jams in mid-town are speckled with many of the over 10,000 yellow cabs that service the city.

The act of flagging down a cab is called "hailing"; there's not much to it, just stick out your arm or go to a taxi stand. When the numbers on the roof of the cab are lit, it is available and empty so you can get in but you need to know that taxi cabs are cash only and it’s $2.50 just for getting in, $.50 for each 30 seconds stopped in traffic.

Taxi cabs are both loved and hated by New Yorkers, and we know that 241 million passengers rode in New York taxis in 1999.The private taxi companies also may run multiple businesses, such as delivery services or school buses.

Ku Klux Klan

KKK

The Ku Klux Klan is the name of several organizations in the United States which advocate white supremacy. They are known for wearing conical hats, masks and white robes.

The first Klan was founded in 1865 by six veterans of the Confederate Army. The members quickly adopted violent methods such as murders or rapes specially against black people. Their first actions caused a lot of indictments even if the number of prosecutions was small. However, the first Klan has been dismantled in 1871.

In 1915 the rebirth of the KKK was marked by William J. Simmons. This time the KKK was legal. Some political men helped the KKK in secret like president Wilson. Nevertheless, KKK was forbidden in 1928.

Nowadays, there are still some groups in the United States which fight for the same things and which pretend to be part of the KKK. In fact the KKK just exists through several organizations in different states which organize themselves with skinhead and neo-nazi movements.

Flatiron Building

Flatiron Building NYC

The Flatiron Building is situated in Manhattan. It was built between 1900 and 1902. It’s one of the first skyscrapers ever built and the oldest surviving building in Manhattan. It sits on a triangular intersection at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and the end of Madison Square.

The Flatiron Building was designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style. The limestone facade looks like a classical column and is divided into three parts. Burnham used a steel frame that we can see from the outside. The building is 87 meters tall. New York's Flatiron is not the first flatiron building. Two buildings were built before but they are smaller than New York’s Flatiron. It’s named Flatiron because it was drawn like a clothes iron. George Wells was very impressed by the building.

Today, the Flatiron is used for commercials. It’s shown in the credits of talk shows, in Spider-Man films. The skyscraper costs $40,000,000. We can’t visit it, but we see the skyscraper from the top of the Empire State Building.

In New York, Christmas is called the holiday season. During the holiday season, people can see bright lights, fabulous shows and Santa Clauses everywhere. The holiday season is also the time of shopping wars. The theme of each shop’s display is a secret until December and families often come from far away to admire them.

The most famous place in New York during the holiday season is Rockefeller Center. Every year, millions of people come there to enjoy its famous Christmas Tree and ice rink. The fir is decorated with 30,000 lights. American people love Christmas trees and they go a little bit mad about having their own Christmas fir. They often go to the restaurant on Christmas Eve, where they eat ethnic food or Chinese food.

Finally, the day after Christmas is the end of the holiday season. Tourists leave the town and New Yorkers go back to work.

High School Sports

High school sports are very important in America. Being an athletes gives you a special status: you look cool, and you are admired by the others, at least if you are very good.

A lot of teenagers belong to a school team, and mostly the girls. The most popular high school sports for girls are basketball, track and field, volleyball, softball, and soccer. And for boys, football, basketball, track and field, baseball, and soccer. High school sports are also very important in town: parents encourage their children with vigor. Athletes wear their school’s colours with pride. Some games can be held in front of 30,000 people.

Unfortunately, high school athletics is becoming more about making a profit. Some teams make thousand of dollars for each game. Because of this money, athletes are under a lot of pressure, use steroids and play while injured. But still a lot of people practice sport for fun. As the church once did, sport events are a glue that hold a social fabric together.
